ChatGPT

Memory (ChatGPT)

What ChatGPT remembers about you between chats: saved memories and what it picks up from your chat history.

The desk and the filing cabinet Left: the context window, the desk for this chat, cleared by a new chat. Right: memory, the filing cabinet between chats, with saved memories and chat history. Context window This chat only. Cleared by a new chat. Memory Between chats. Keep it accurate. vs A new chat clears the desk, not the cabinet.

Memory lets ChatGPT carry what it learns about you from one chat to the next. There are two parts: saved memories, specific facts it has stored, and chat history, details it can draw from past conversations.

That is handy, and it can also go stale or wrong. You can read the memory summary, see where a memory came from, and delete what's off under Settings, Personalization, Memory. Deleting a chat doesn't delete a memory saved from it. For a clean slate, use a Temporary Chat. Projects can have their own, fenced-off memory.

Often confused with: The context window. The context window is what ChatGPT holds in this chat; memory is the filing cabinet it brings from chat to chat.

See it in a lesson: Context and memory
