# Writing block

> An editable block in a ChatGPT chat where a draft lives, so you and ChatGPT can change parts of it without rewriting the whole thing.

**Category:** ChatGPT

**A writing block holds a draft inside the chat as an editable document.** When ChatGPT writes something longer, like an email, a memo, or a section of a report, it can put it in a block you can edit directly, select parts of, and ask ChatGPT to change.

That makes iterating faster: "make this paragraph shorter" changes one paragraph, not the whole text. Code gets the same treatment in a code block. When a draft needs to live on and be shared, it can move to a [Page](/glossary#chatgpt-pages).

## At work

Drafting a tricky client email? Ask for it in a writing block, fix the opening yourself, then select the last paragraph and ask for a warmer close.

## Often confused with

A Page. A writing block lives inside one chat; a Page is a document in Space that you can share and edit with others.
