Chat (ChatGPT)

One conversation thread in ChatGPT: everything you asked and everything it answered, saved on its own in your Recents.

One chat, one thread You ask, ChatGPT answers, you follow up: all of it stays in one chat, saved in Recents. You ask a message ChatGPT answers in the same thread You follow up steer it Saved in Recents one thread New topic? New chat.

A chat is one thread of back-and-forth with ChatGPT. Everything in it, your messages, files, and its replies, sits in that chat's context window. Start a new chat and that desk is clear again.

ChatGPT adds two layers on top. Memory can carry details about you from chat to chat, and a project can give a group of chats the same files and instructions. In the desktop app, Chat is also the name of the quick back-and-forth mode, next to Work.

Often confused with: Work. A chat answers you message by message; Work takes on a whole multi-step task and hands back a finished file.
